A total solar eclipse, a unique and amazing celestial occurrence, will occur across North America on April 8, 2024. A narrow path that stretches from Mexico up through the central United States and into the northeastern states and Canada will allow observers to see this total eclipse. The moon will totally obscure the sun, providing a view of the sun's corona or outer atmosphere for those who are lucky enough to be in the path of totality. As the first total solar eclipse to be viewable from the mainland United States since 1979, this magnificent eclipse is already being dubbed the "Great American Eclipse".
What is a Total Solar Eclipse?
When the moon passes exactly between the Earth and the sun, it completely blocks out the light from the sun and casts a shadow over a tiny portion of the surface. This phenomenon is known as a total solar eclipse. The solar corona, which is normally hidden, is seen during the brief total eclipse time when the moon completely obscures the sun's dazzling face. It appears as a ring of flimsy white light encircling the moon's black disk. One of the most breathtaking natural phenomena is a total solar eclipse.
The umbra and penumbra are the two concentric cone-shaped parts that make up the moon's shadow. The deepest, darkest shadow cast when the moon fully obscures the sun is known as the umbra. This is the area where the total eclipse will be visible to observers. The external partial shadow is called the penumbra.
When and Where Can I See the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse?
The total solar eclipse of April 8th, 2024 will be visible across a narrow swath of North America, starting in the Pacific Ocean and crossing into Mexico and the United States. The path of totality will first make landfall in Mexico around 11:07 am CDT before entering Texas. Here are some of the major cities along or very near the path:
- Mazatlán, Mexico
- Monclova, Mexico
- Eagle Pass, Texas
- Del Rio, Texas
- San Antonio, Texas
- Austin, Texas
- Dallas, Texas
- Little Rock, Arkansas
- Greenville, Mississippi
- Nashville, Tennessee
- Bloomington, Indiana
- Dayton, Ohio
- Cleveland, Ohio
- Buffalo, New York
- Burlington, Vermont
- Montreal, Canada
The total eclipse will end at sunset in Newfoundland, Canada at around 7:49 pm ADT. Across this entire path, the moon will cast its umbra (full shadow) on the Earth for a period ranging from just under 2 minutes up to 2 minutes and 41 seconds - the maximum duration.
Those located anywhere inside the Path of Totality will be able to view the total solar eclipse, weather permitting. However, outside this relatively narrow path, observers will only see a partial eclipse as the moon passes off-center in front of the sun.
Best Places to View the 2024 Eclipse
While the total eclipse will be visible along the entire path, some locations may offer better viewing than others due to factors like weather prospects, amenities, transportation, and tourism planning. Here are some of the locations that are being highlighted as potentially ideal spots to experience the "Great American Eclipse":
Texas Hill Country - The Texas Hill Country region west of Austin and San Antonio offers a combination of good weather prospects, interesting landscape, and proximity to major population centers and transportation hubs. Some specific locations being promoted include Fredericksburg, Texas and areas around Johnson City.
Ozark Mountains - The Ozark Mountain region spanning Missouri, Arkansas, and eastern Oklahoma is another area being billed as a prime eclipse viewing destination. The small city of Carbondale, Illinois lies directly on the centerline of the eclipse path and plans major events.
Cleveland Metro Area - Cleveland lies directly along the path and its cloudy reputation may be offset by being located on the warm waters of Lake Erie. The Cleveland Museum of Natural History plans major viewing events.
Buffalo/Niagara Falls - The Niagara Falls region sits inside the path of totality just across the New York/Ontario border. Popular viewing locations could include Niagara Falls State Park.
Ontario/Quebec - Southeastern Ontario and southwestern Quebec, including the cities of Montreal and Ottawa will be in prime position to intercept the total eclipse on its final pass over North American landmass.
No matter which specific location you choose, it's important to book lodging, campsites, etc. well in advance as demand will be extremely high along the entire path. Ideally, have a backup viewing location or two in mind as well.
How to View the 2024 Eclipse Safely
While experiencing the total phase of an eclipse is completely safe, looking directly at the partial phases without proper eye protection can potentially cause permanent eye damage or blindness. Special eclipse glasses are required anytime even a sliver of the sun's disk is visible.
The cheapest and most readily available option is to purchase "Eclipse Glasses" or hand-held solar viewers certified to meet the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard. These should only be obtained from reputable vendors. Unsafe homemade filters or normal sunglasses are NOT adequate for safe eclipse viewing.
An alternative is to indirectly view the sun's image by projecting it through a small opening like a pin-hole projector or by using binoculars or telescopes with appropriate solar filters attached. This allows you to watch the entire eclipse unfold safely while protecting your eyes.
During the brief period of total eclipse, when the sun is 100% blocked by the moon, it is safe to view with the naked eye. However, extreme caution should be used to avoid inadvertently looking at the actual sun before or after totality. Remove your eclipse glasses only during full total eclipse and replace them again as soon as the sun begins to re-emerge.
